Pollution Under the Radar

Palms Middle School

An Instagram account and podcast uncovering the way "eco-friendly" cars negatively affect our environment.

In an un-walkable city like Los Angeles, cars are something we can’t live without. Branded as an eco-friendly and green alternative to gas cars, electric vehicles are sought after for their perceived positive impact on the environment. However, while more ecological than your conventional car, EVs still pose a significant environmental threat. In fact, the lithium in one Tesla Model S requires 33,000 gallons of water to mine, and its battery requires three times the energy of a regular car battery. Pollution Under the Radar is a podcast and Instagram account which uncovers the hidden environmental harms of electric vehicles, including their contribution to poor soil quality, groundwater contamination, and chemical air pollution. With time, this public outreach campaign will bring awareness to lithium mining and encourage solutions that will change the course of electric transportation.
