A Small Taste of Zero-Waste
Palms Middle School
An educational campaign to create a zero-waste school, starting by composting lunchroom waste.
Excess trash means excess water and power expenditure in transportation and processing. A Small Taste of Zero-Waste is a program encouraging students, teachers and staff to take all the food waste produced over lunchtime and put it where it belongs – the compost bin. An educational initiative, the program highlights all the benefits of composting through comprehensive research and also puts words to action by assembling and installing compost systems at school. With compost, one can reduce their outdoor watering needs by up to 25% (almost 25 gallons per day!). Also, by reducing trash, it reduces power and water usage needed in processing and transporting trash (garbage trucks only get about 2-3 miles per gallon).
